Giovanni Antonio Canal 1697-1768
[The Grand Canal, Venice, Looking Southeast, with the Campo della Carità to the Right]
Canal was a landscape painter and printmaker from the Republic of Venice. This work is part of a series of 20 view paintings made for Joseph*Smith, then British Consul. The view reflected in the painting is of a row of buildings almost identical to those seen today from the Ponte dell'Accademia, and it expresses the depth and beauty of Venice's history.
