Lin Zexu was a prominent Chinese scholar and official during the Qing Dynasty, best known for his strong stance against the opium trade in the lead-up to the First Opium War. Appointed as an imperial commissioner, he famously confiscated and destroyed large quantities of opium in Canton in 1839. His resolute actions, though ultimately leading to conflict with Britain, have cemented his place in Chinese history as a national hero for his efforts to combat the detrimental effects of opium on Chinese society.
